Hello lovely readers! Welcome to the December 2018 Author Spotlight! Today’s guest is USA Today Bestselling Author, Jennifer Laslie! She’s a good friend of mine, so it was really fun hearing her answers! Enjoy!
ELLE: Who’s your favorite Fantasy/PNR/Dystopian, etc. heroine? Why do you love her so much?
JENNIFER: I absolutely love Dystopian and if I had to pick a favorite heroine, it would be Katniss from Hunger Games. She’s badass! She does what she can to survive and also knows how to show kindness along the way.
ELLE: What does your typical writing day/schedule look like?
J: When I’m actually writing, I usually will get up early before work and sit down for at least an hour and a half and write. On a good day, I can get around 2K in before work if I know where the story is going. On a bad day, I hope and pray for 1K! After this move to Utah, I plan on getting back on a schedule and pounding out some books on my laptop!
ELLE: If you could have ONE magical power… what would you choose, and why?
J: I would love to be able to control the elements. Don’t ask me why. I’ve always had this passion for nature and being able to bend it to my will. I’m a Sagittarius, so I have a fascination with fire as well.
ELLE: What is your strangest habit? (Doesn’t have to be writing related)
J: It’s no secret I’m a little OCD, so I have some strange habits when it comes with numbers. I always love even numbers or intervals of five. When I clock in at work, it can’t be on an odd number unless it ends in five. I know, it’s a little strange.
ELLE: How many words-per-book (and words-per-day) do you aim to write? How long does it usually take you to complete a novel of that length?
J: When I’m pushing myself, I strive for 2K a day. For a complete book, I try to reach 60K. If get more, I’m thrilled. How long it takes me to write that novel depends on how well it’s speaking to me. If I have a solid outline, I can write it fairly fast.
ELLE: What’s your favorite book-to-movie adaptation?
J: Do I really have to answer this question? We all know the book is always better than the movie. I’ve been disappointed so many times when I read them book then saw the movie when it came out. I can’t pinpoint which one was the best, but the most recent book I’ve read before the move came out was “Everything, Everything”. I think they did a decent job of sticking to the book.
ELLE: What’s the most effective marketing strategy you’ve tried? And how did you go about implementing it?
J: If I told you, I’d have to kill you! Mwa ha ha ha! Actually, the best marketing strategy I’ve learned to date has been one of Rebecca Hamilton’s classes. She had a “Releasing a book on a budget” class and it helped me with my last release so well! I wish I could divulge all the great little tidbits I learned in that class!
ELLE: You may choose 3 fictional characters to be on your team in the zombie apocalypse…
Who are they?
J: Damon Salvatore from Vampire Diaries, Jamie Fraser from Outlander, and Katniss from Hunger Games (she’s a great shot!).
ELLE: What’s the best writing tip you’ve received or would give to a fellow author?
J: Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t write. If there is a story that speaks to you, write it. And you should never write for others. Write for yourself and make it fun!
ELLE: In my series, The Essential Elements, the characters have the ability to control 1 of the 4 Classical Elements (Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind).
If you could control ONE… which would you choose, and why?
J: Fire, because I’m a Sagittarius and a fire sign.
ELLE: Please tell us a bit about your latest release!
J: My next release will be How to Spell Disaster. I’ve got one chapter left to write on it and then it goes to my editor. This will be the first book in my Unfortunate Spells Series, which are all paranormal rom coms.
Poor Tucker finds a spell book, horribly translates a spell to find true love, and ends up with a hoard of women after him. The situations he finds himself in are quite laughable. If only he could find true loves first kiss, then he could break the spell!
Thanks so much, Jennifer! It was a joy having you on the blog!
